Think about two kinds of exams. In a closed-book exam, you can only use what you memorized. You might remember most things, but you could mix up a date or misremember a rule, and you would never notice. In an open-book exam, you can check the textbook first and then answer. You find the exact page, read the exact sentence, and your answer is much more accurate. RAG gives an AI model an "open book": your school's rules, a company's manuals, a fresh database. Instead of answering from a fuzzy memory, it looks it up, reads it, and answers from what it found.
