While you're solving a jigsaw puzzle, you remember, "I already tried that piece in the corner, it didn't fit." That's short-term memory: super useful right now, but you'll forget it the moment the puzzle is done. At the same time, you also know, "I'm generally good at puzzles with animals, I always start with the eyes." That's long-term memory: it stays with you for years and helps with every puzzle. Agents need both kinds too: one to avoid repeating themselves during a task, and one to remember what matters from one task to the next.
