A doorbell camera does not need you to press "record" whenever someone approaches. It is wired to a specific event — a person appears at the door — and it starts recording every single time, without your attention. Hooks in Claude Code follow the same idea: you wire a command to an event ("a file was edited", "a session ended", "a shell command is about to run"), and from then on Claude Code fires that command by itself, every time, without asking. The nagging bit of your workflow becomes background music.
